Maria Sharapova beaten by birthday girl Carla Suarez Navarro in New York

She lost 4-6, 3-6 to Spanish birthday girl Carla Suarez Navarro who inflicted the Russian's first ever night-time loss at the tournament.

Millman will take on 13-time Grand Slam victor Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals after the 6th seeded Serbian sailed past Joao Sousa of Portugal 6-3, 6-4, 6-3.

Next up for Keys, who was routed by Sloane Stephens in last year's final, is the victor of the evening clash between five-times grand slam champion Maria Sharapova and Spanish 30th seed Carla Suarez Navarro. This is the way that I can play really good tennis. Suarez, who turned 30 on Monday, is playing her eleventh US Open and made it to the quarter-finals for the second time after her first quarter-final in 2013, reports EFE news agency. "I really enjoyed this crowd, this wonderful night session", Suárez Navarro said. "It's the first time I've played this year at night. I think I've done plenty in my career, established a lot for myself personally, professionally", she replied.

Five-times Grand Slam champion Sharapova paid the price for 38 unforced errors and won less than half of her first serve points while committing eight double faults.

Next up for Osaka is a clash against Ukraine's 36th-ranked - and fellow Grand Slam quarter-final debutant - Lesia Tsurenko. "You just have a dream", she said in her post-match interview, during which she laughed off suggestions that her best days are behind her.

Kei Nishikori will be hoping to make another deep run at his most successful Grand Slam event after he easily outclassed Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3, 6-2, 7-5 to reach the quarter-finals.

Sabalenka, who was not ranked high enough to get into the tournament 12 months ago, has been one of the form players of the summer and arrived in NY on the back of her first WTA Tour title in New Haven before beating Petra Kvitova in the third round.

The last of her five Grand Slam titles came at Roland Garros in 2014 with the period since interrupted by a 14-month doping ban.

Suarez Navarro often let the 22nd-seeded Sharapova create her own problems. He also blew a set point in the third. "I don't get it", she said.

Osaka, seeded 20, came back from a break down in the final set to take the tie on a fourth match point when Sabalenka served up an eighth double fault.

"I hesitated to move forward". She hit only 17 winners, but the 19-year-old Vondrousova made 90 errors - 73 unforced. "I want to have a happy birthday, and I have it".

With only two top-10 players left in the women's draw - Czech eighth seed Karolina Pliskova and defending champion Sloane Stephens - another opportunity has passed the Russian.

She was able to play through the pain and eventually won the match in 2 hours, 32 minutes.

Keys has been solid in NY, having dropped a single set through four matches, and turned it up a notch against her 29th-seeded opponent as she lost only 10 points on serve during a 76-minute match in which she was broken once.
