How and When to Watch Apple Event Debuting New iPhone

Apple unveiled three new iPhones, including two with bigger displays, but perhaps the more dramatic announcement from Cupertino, Calif., on Wednesday was its new Apple Watch, with the new health-related tools.

All three new phones are expected to follow the iPhone X design in that there will not be a home button and instead facial recognition technology will be used to unlock the device. The iPhone XS has a price that starts at $999, but tops out at $1,349.

In addition, unlike the stainless steel compositions of the Xs and Xs Max, the Xr is made of "7000 series aerospace grade aluminum" with a glass back for wireless charging, while opting for a single 12-megapixel wide-angle rear lens camera, rather than dual lenses. The iPhone XS has a 5.8-inch (14.7-cm) screen.

Apple just announced that its lower-cost iPhone is officially known as the iPhone XR. Outwardly, it will look a lot like the iPhone X but will get a processor and memory boost. You can also add specific people or time zones to the watch face.

Is Bigger Better? The iPhone X will have exactly the same size body and 5.8-inch display as the iPhone X introduced a year ago. Its 6.5-inch Super Retina display is in the same league as the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 (6.4-inch) phablet.

The iPhone Xr will come in white, black, blue, coral, yellow, and Product Red.

The microphone and speaker were both improved to enable better calling from your wrists, and watchOS 5's new "raise to Siri" feature, which allows you to skip saying "Hey Siri", means I'm using the digital assistant more than ever.

iOS 12 will be at the core of the new iPhone X, and with it, brings the usual array of treats and new features to the phone ahead of what users have already experienced before. Also, the XR doesn't support Apple's 3D Touch, a feature that can display additional content based on how hard you press the screen.

The Apple Watch Series 4 will be available for pre-order on September 14 and launch on September 21, starting at $399 for the Global Positioning System model and $499 for the cellular option.

The Apple Watch is getting some big upgrades.

Apple says that the iPhone XS will offer 30 minutes more battery life than the iPhone X, while the XS Max will serve up to 90 more minutes of juice than last year's model. Certainly, games created to tap into the newly-more-potent GPU looked visually better than earlier iOS titles, though I suspect the extra turn of speed will be most valued in multitasking and combating the inevitable slowdown over time that all smartphones seem to suffer. With curved corners, it's also slightly thinner, has more reliable reception and two times faster, thanks to a new processor. Even with all this power, iPhone XR lasts up to an hour and a half longer than iPhone 8 Plus.
