President Trump addresses UN General Assembly in NYC

An expert with the National Iranian American Council expressed a similar sentiment following Mr Trump's speech.

Only U.S. President Donald Trump, who chaired the session, spoke against the deal known as the JCPOA and appeared isolated as a result, Rouhani said.

He said he had "no need for a photo opportunity" with Trump and suggested the USA president's pull back from global institutions was a character defect.

The accusation came during an address in which the American leader once again rebuked global norms and order, and defended his decision to pull the U.S. from the Iran nuclear agreement, which had been pushed for and signed by former President Barack Obama.

Citing rising protests in Tehran and "optimism toward the direction things are going with Iran", Lieberman praised Trump's decision to restore sanctions-receiving applause from the audience of diplomats upon just mentioning the president's election. Let my message today be clear: "We are watching and we will come after you", Bolton was to say.

"I didn't expect that reaction, but that's OK", he said.

"Iran's leaders sow chaos, death and destruction", Trump told the gathering in the green-marbled hall.

Political commentators widely noted that it was remarkable for a United States president to be laughed at by members of the assembly, without having provided an intentional punchline.

Asked about Pompeo's contention that the United States will hold Iran responsible for any actions by Iraqi Shiite groups that harm USA personnel or diplomatic facilities in Iraq, Rouhani did not concede that Iran directs or has control over those groups, and suggested that the U.S. presence in Iraq may not be welcome on the ground.

"Well, that was meant to get some laughter, but it was great", Trump said of the moment, which went viral on social media. "We reject the ideology of globalism, and we embrace the doctrine of patriotism".

Pompeo criticized the European Union's intention to establish a work-around to USA sanctions, while Bolton warned of "hell to pay" if Iran continued aggravating other nations.

Trump compared USA relations with Iran to what he called improved ties with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who Trump had met in Singapore in June as part of a still-unfulfilled drive to get Pyongyang to give up its nuclear weapons.

"Not this year, nor last year", Rouhani told CNN on Tuesday. "Iran has to feel they have no one left to turn to".

The broadside against Iran was emblematic of Trump's willingness to go it alone on the world stage to advance what he sees as US interests, a central theme of his speech to the general assembly.

Tehran accounts for about 5 percent of Tokyo's total crude oil imports.
