All you need to know about the Brett Kavanaugh sex abuse row

As Christine Blasey Ford prepares to answer questions around an alleged assault by Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh in the early 1980s, a third accuser has stepped forward.

He also said Democrats used Ford for their own political purposes and that she was their victim - as was Kavanaugh. "The uproarious laughter between the two, and their having fun at my expense", Ford said, referring to Brett Kavanaugh and his friend Mark Judge, who she says was in the room.

She alleged that Kavanaugh and others while in high school spiked the drinks of girls at parties with intoxicants to make it easier for them to be gang raped.

During her opening remarks on Thursday, Ford said she was "terrified" to be there but felt it was her "civic duty".

Asked how certain she was that Kavanaugh was her attacker, she declared, "100 percent".

"Republican senators have delayed this for weeks now", Mr Trump said. "It's possible I'll hear that, and I'll say, 'Hey, I'm changing my mind'".

Christine Blasey Ford is sworn in before testifying the Senate Judiciary Committee in the Dirksen Senate Office Building at the Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, U.S., September 27, 2018.

Republicans can confirm Kavanaugh along party lines, but to do so, they can only afford to lose one vote.

During the hearing, Donald Trump Jr. in a tweet made the argument more bluntly.

Kavanaugh on Wednesday once again rejected the allegations as "last minute smears" that were "false and uncorroborated". I intend no ill will to Dr. Ford and her family.

Democrats hope that outrage among women will drive them to the polls to help them take control of Congress. Republicans recognize that the confirmation of a nominee accused of sexual assault would be a political liability, but hope to energize the conservative base by focusing on what they characterize as a left-wing character assassination campaign.

Then Kavanaugh strode into the committee room, arranged his nameplate, and with anger on his face started to testify with a statement he said he had shown only one other person.

"An executive business meeting is being noticed tonight in the event that a majority of the members are prepared to hold one on Friday", Taylor Foy, a spokesman for Grassley, said. Some White House officials were not pleased with the questioning from Phoenix prosecutor Rachel Mitchell, saying she did not effectively target the weak spots in Ford's narrative and worrying that the Democrats had seized the moment. I never had any sexual or physical encounter of any kind with Dr Ford.

"The same way that I'm sure I'm talking to you right now", Ford said, "just basic memory functions". "Let me tell my Democratic friends, if this is the new norm, you better watch out for your nominees".

Despite the unanswered questions that remain after hours of public testimony from Ford and Kavanaugh, there's no plan for further investigation.

Graham, who is a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, was discussing Ford's testimony, when a woman who later identified herself on Twitter as Robyn Swirling spoke to Graham. Under no circumstances should Brett Kavanaugh be confirmed absent a full and complete investigation.

Democrats on the committee praised Blasey Ford for coming forward and repeatedly questioned Mr Kavanaugh about his drinking habits in high school, asking if he had ever "blacked out" while drunk.
