Papua New Guinea authorities have confirmed that an Air Niugini plane has overshot a runway in Micronesia and ended up in the ocean.

The flight was then scheduled to continue on to Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea.

Jimmy Emilio, general manager of Chuuk Airport, said the plane landed about 150 yards short of the runway and the cause of the crash was unclear.

Striking footage from the scene shows people being rescued in.

It wasn't immediately clear whether the Boeing 737-800 plane crashed in the lagoon, located near an airport, during its take-off or landing, the outlet reported.

He said he has yet to see a passenger manifest, but he understands at least 30 passengers and 10 crew members were aboard. The airline is making all efforts to ensure the safety and immediate needs of our passengers and crew.

It added there were no serious injuries.

Images circulating online showed the Air Niugini plane, from Papua New Guinea, sitting in shallow water just off the coast.

"We don't really know what happened", he said.

"I thought, well, this is not like the way it's supposed to happen", he said. Initial reports indicate the flight was arriving and landed in the water.

The PNG Accident Investigation Commission was sending a team to the accident site, the ABC reported.
