Airline in miracle lagoon landing has never had fatality

The nine Filipino seafarers who were onboard the Air Niugini plane that crash landed in Micronesia are all safe, the Philippine Consulate office in Guam said on Sunday.

Seven people had been taken to hospital and the airline said that six passengers remained at the hospital Saturday, all of them in a stable condition.

Fortunately, it did not end in fatalities as all 47 passengers and crew survived after the pilot missed the runway.

The airline did not immediately respond to requests for more details about the passenger, such as his age or nationality.

According to USA Today, all passengers and crew evacuated the aircraft safely thanks to the quick response of local boats as well as US Navy Sailors who were working on a wharf nearby.

Jaynes, a Micronesian journalist, was aboard a plane set to land on Weno, the tiny Pacific island that is part of the Federated States of Micronesia.

"I thought we landed hard until I looked over and saw a hole in the side of the plane and water coming in". "I thought, well, this is not the way it's supposed to happen".

Jaynes said he and others managed to wade through waist-deep water to the emergency exits on the sinking plane. "One would think they might be afraid of approaching the plane that's just crashed".

Local authorities are investigating the cause of the crash. The airline and the US Navy both said the plane landed in the lagoon short of the runway.

The Boeing 737-800 is purportedly a 13-year-old aircraft that was previously operated by Jet Airways and Air India Express and was involved in a collision at Port Moresby in May, The Guardian reported.

He said he has yet to see a passenger manifest, but typical passengers would include businesspeople from Micronesia, Papua New Guinea and Australia, as well as some tourists.

The airline said weather was poor at the time of the landing with heavy rain and low visibility. "Everybody came together and rushed to the plane and rescued the passengers". It has close ties with the USA under an agreement known as a compact of free association.

'I'm alive. That's an extremely good thing, ' said Jaynes.
