Luke Shaw defends Jose Mourinho after 'awful' West Ham defeat

"No excuses. As players we weren't good enough".

And for Manchester United, their problems were written large on a torturous afternoon at West Ham yesterday after a 3-1 defeat.

Languishing nine points behind leaders City, they now face a battle even to qualify for the lucrative Champions League, a prospect that will give the money men sleepless nights.

"You've got to put it behind you quickly and when you have these types of results you want a game as quickly as possible", wing-back Ashley Young told the club's website.

Manchester United are a club in crisis and Jose Mourinho is seemingly powerless to prevent a slide into mid-table mediocrity for the 20-time English champions.

Sanchez wouldn't be the first creative player Mourinho has failed to get the best out of.

When asked by BT Sport whether he had a message for Mourinho, the Austria global replied: "No, nothing to say".

A report claims that Alexis Sanchez was shocked to be overlooked for inclusion against West Ham United and is already regretting his decision to join Manchester United.

"I just think they have actually become a very, very average team with a very negative manager". "It was not good enough from a Man Utd team with all the talent we have". You look at our team and we had a very strong team.

"In the past we've seen managers relieved of their duties, that's what would normally happen", said the six-time Premier League victor. "And after weeks of analysing and changing opinions with my coaching staff we made the decision that from now Paul is just a player and not a captain".

"From the first minute you could see we weren't winning the second balls and our duels".

Left-back Shaw apologised to supporters for United's "awful" performance at the London Stadium and said the players needed to take a hard look at themselves.

José Mourinho's future at Manchester United is hanging in the balance. That didn't happen. It's disappointing and a very, very bad day for us.

United are lacking in ideas, short of inspiration and shape, with numerous players looking like square pegs in round holes.

But the truth was they did not need to be on fire to beat this United team, who have now picked up the least number of points from their opening seven games of a top-flight season since 1989-90.
