Rockies advance to NLDS with extra-innings victory over Cubs

This is the second time that each franchise has played in the Wild Card Game. Anthony Rizzo's solo shot accounted for the Cubs' lone run in a 3-1 loss to Milwaukee, while Nolan Arenado and Trevor Story hit back-to-back blasts to get the Rockies on the board in their 5-2 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Jon Lester will be starting, squaring off against fellow lefty Kyle Freeland.

One of the heroes of the Cubs' run to a World Series title two years ago will not be available for Tuesday's NL wild-card game.

"We've got to stop worrying about other teams", he said. They're focused on the Lester with the Cubs now - and lately he's been very good.

"It's the seventh game of the World Series right out of the chute", Cubs manager Joe Maddon told reporters.

"I don't know if there is anybody better in the big leagues in a situation like this", said Cubs infielder Daniel Murphy, who faced Lester in the 2015 playoffs with the Mets and the 2017 postseason with the Nationals. Going with matchups, he inserted the slumping

But after Almora singled to lead off the second, Freeland retired the next 12 hitters through the fifth inning, and the zeroes on the old center field scoreboard kept piling up as the night went on.

This game becomes an instant October classic. Although I might normally lean toward the former, I'm going with the latter in this case, not only because of Edwards' extreme wildness problems, but also because Sunday's appearance marked the lowest velocity of his career (he averaged under 93 mph), and continued a trend in that direction since mid-August.
