Going the distance: Brees breaks National Football League mark for yards passing

They committed dumb penalties - safety Montae Nicholson shoved a Saints player after a Ryan Kerrigan sack that would have forced a punt.

A detailed view of a NFL logo on a football pylon as the Washington Redskins play the New Orleans Saints at FedExField on November 15, 2015 in Landover, Maryland. He finished the game completing 26 of 29 passes for 363 yards and three touchdowns. Washington scored its first second-half touchdown of the season early in the fourth quarter, but the efforts were too little too late.

"I didn't set out on this journey to break these records". On the first play of the drive, Brees launched a pass toward the right sideline to the speedy Smith, who was wide open and easily sprinted away from Nicholson's tackle attempt en route to the end zone.

"I don't know if that will ever sink in", Brees added. But I don't think it could have happened in any better fashion than it did.

It's hard to imagine or remember a worse loss in the coach Jay Gruden era; not just by margin of victory, but for the team's utter incompetence.

Brees' teammates ran toward their quarterback as he jogged behind the play, and a group of them formed a jumping, celebrating mass of black and gold next to the Saints' fleur-de-lis emblem on the 50-yard line.

Head coach Sean Payton says he'll prepare his team like it's any other week. The football Smith caught for the record-setting touchdown was given to David Baker, president of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, to take back to Canton, Ohio.

Brees entered the game needing 201 yards for the record. Brees' ability on the field that has proven for almost two decades behind his pinpoint accuracy and ability to raise the level of play of his teammates around that has truly taken off since he joined the Saints.
