Xbox One Update Brings Amazon Alexa Integration, Next-Gen Avatars, Dolby Vision

The hotly-anticipated new Xbox Avatars are coming to the system with a wide range of different body types, clothing, and accessibility options that will allow players to customize their Avatars to their liking. Xbox Avatars never quite caught on like the Nintendo's Mii avatars did, but they were popular enough on Xbox 360 to prompt the team to enhance them for the next generation console. You don't have to adopt a new Xbox Avatar if you don't want to, as you can keep your old Avatar if you so wish, but there are new items in the Avatar Store, including licensed props from the likes of Halo and Gears of War.

The skill requires an Alexa- or Cortana-enabled device such as a Windows 10 PC, Amazon Echo, Harman Kardon Invoke speaker, or Sonos One. This feature completes the Dolby duo, as Microsoft already added support for Dolby Atmos spatial sound to the Xbox One in late 2017.

Commands include power on/off, adjust volume, launch games and apps, start and stop broadcasts on Mixer, capture screenshots, and more.

In the U.S., anyone purchasing an Xbox One S or Xbox One X bundle at will also include a new Amazon Echo Dot, while supplies last.

Another highlight of the October 2018 Update is support for Dolby Vision HDR video streaming.

This feature allows supported TVs to deliver enhanced HDR images, and is now supported by the Netflix app for Xbox. Dolby Vision on Netflix with a premium subscription will be supported at launch with more Dolby Vision apps adding support in the coming months.

Finally, five new languages have been added to Narrator on Xbox One: Spanish, Portuguese, Polish, Swedish, and Dutch.

"Avatars will appear across your Xbox One". There's an Australian version of English coming for Narrator as well, eliminating the need for Australian gamers to select United States or UK English to utilize the app.
