"I heard that report, but nobody knows if it's an official report", Trump told reporters, without elaborating.

Khashoggi went missing on October 2 after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey, to obtain a license to marry his Turkish fiancée.

The person said Prince Mohammed had approved an interrogation or rendition of Mr. Khashoggi back to Saudi Arabia.

Khashoggi vanished early this month after entering Saudi Arabia's consulate in Istanbul.

In a statement released on Monday, Mr Khashoggi's family said: "We are sadly and anxiously following the conflicting news regarding the fate of our father after losing contact with him two weeks ago".

Reporters waiting outside the consulate in Istanbul's Levent district said early October 16 that Turkish crime scene investigators turned off all the lights and surveyed the interior of the Saudi consulate with a special blue light used in forensics probes.

CNN reports that the Saudi government is preparing to say Jamal Khashoggi died during an interrogation that went wrong. "Determining what happened to Jamal Khashoggi is something of great importance to the president", she said. The White House's closeness to MBS has been controversial as the crown prince has made one mistake after another and has delivered little result, King Salman bin Abdul Aziz overrode MBS to reaffirm Saudi support for the Palestinians and condemn the U.S. Embassy move to Jerusalem, and the Aramco listing has been put on ice. But he said the royal court would soon put out a narrative that an official within the kingdom's intelligence services - who happened to be a friend of Prince Mohammed - had carried out the killing.

"US sanctions on Riyadh would mean Washington is stabbing itself", said the general manager of the Dubai based Al-Arabiya news channel, Turki Aldakhil.

Speaking of the Holocaust, Khashoggi called the chapter a frightful episode in history, but also said that there were other awful events throughout history, such as the burning of Baghdad by the Mongols in the Middle Ages or the Palestinian Nakba.

King Salman has replaced two crown princes in the past.

Saudi officials have not answered repeated requests for comment over recent days from The Associated Press. Trump has repeatedly said he does not want to risk what he claims is $110 billion in arms sales to the Saudis.

The issue has strained Saudi Arabia's ties with its closest Western allies. Writing in an op-ed yesterday, Aldakhil suggested that the Russians and Iranians will exploit the vacuum while the West would suffer economically due an astronomical rise in oil price, which he said could increase to as much as $200 a barrel. But Trump was already facing pressure from some in Congress to respond to the Saudis with economic sanctions.

"Pelosi also cited Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin's planned trip to a financial conference in Riyadh, despite many having pulled out, and added, "[Trump's] relationship with Saudi Arabia is something".
