Canelo Alvarez signs highest-earning sports contract of all time

It is the biggest contract in sports history, surpassing the $325m 13-year contract extension signed by baseball star Giancarlo Stanton at the Miami Marlins in 2014.

Alvarez is now the unified middleweight champion of boxing, coming off a majority decision win over Gennady Golovkin last month.

DAZN is already home to plethora of boxing content, thanks in large part to a deal with Matchroom Boxing, as well as wealth of MMA attractions, such as Bellator, KSW, and Combate Americas.

Canelo's deal with DAZN, which runs through 2023, will begin with the middleweight world champion's bout against fellow world titlist Rocky Fielding on 15th December at Madison Square Garden.

Whilst Alvarez will still fight under the Golden Boy banner, his connection to DAZN could allow for fights with English fighters signed with Hearn.

And while the company had talks with Showtime, ESPN and Turner Sports, president Eric Gomez said DAZN's offer was hard to turn down.

The potentially good news for fight fans: Alvarez's bouts typically have cost around $80 apiece on pay per view, but the DAZN all-sports streaming service charges $9.99 a month and features an assortment of combat sports offerings, per ESPN.

Alvarez's deal will see him make a minimum of $365 million over the course of five years and ten fights - moving away from HBO since their decision to leave the business.

'I think in that first fight, experience beat me as I was very young. The deal is with sports streaming service DAZN and means an average take of $33 million per fight. That fight, like most of boxing's biggest, was shown on pay-per-view.

The 28-year-old is set to fight Britain's Rocky Fielding on December 15 but he still has eyes on putting right that loss, the only one in 53 career fights.

"Never. I was never anxious because I'm very confident in myself", he said. If DAZN hits certain subscriber benchmarks, Alvarez will rake in additional cash. "DAZN has the ideal platform to make this dream come true, and with the biggest star in the sport at the helm of this journey, I have no doubts that we will succeed in unimaginable ways". "I know how important I am to any platform I go to".

"I've always liked a challenge, and this is yet another challenger in my career", said Canelo Alvarez. The fight was the last of his broadcast deal with HBO, who recently announced they'll be exiting the boxing game after several decades.
