'Father of Taliban' Mullah Sami ul-Haq killed in Pakistan: deputy

"Upon returning to the room, the driver found Maulana Samiul Haq dead in his bed and his body covered in blood", he said. The JUI-S chief was injured and was being taken to the hospital when he succumbed to his wounds on the way.

A security guard of Sami ul Haq also has sustained serious injury, the report said.

Maulana Samiul Haq was also the leader the Darul Uloom Haqqania religious seminary and was openly supporting the Taliban-led insurgency in Afghanistan. Condemning this tragic incident, he expressed sympathy with the bereaved family.

Condemnations started pouring in following the assassination of Maulana Samiul Haq, who was brutally stabbed to death at his residence in Rawalpindi on Friday. The prime minister has sought a report and directed that an investigation be carried out immediately to find the perpetrators.

"With Maulana Sami-ul-Haq's martyrdom, the country has lost an important religious and political leader", he said on Friday.

He headed a political party and was twice elected as member of the Senate, the upper house of Pakistan's parliament.

Minister of State for Interior Shehryar Afridi has also condemned the assasination.

Samiul Haq was now the chancellor of Darul Uloom Haqqania, a Deobandi Islamic seminary which is the alma mater of many prominent Taliban members.

Afghan Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said the "people of Afghanistan will never forget (Haq's) services for them" and his killers were the "enemies of Islam".

Naeem ul Haq, the special assistant to Prime Minister Imran Khan, strongly condemned the killing of Maulana Samiul Haq. Haq had emerged as one of Khan's allies since the PTI came to power in the province after elections in 2013.
