Ted Cruz holds back the Democrat Texas tide - for now

In total, Cruz and O'Rourke raised more than $100 million. The most recent Emerson poll (October 30) showing Cruz at +3, and the latest Quinnipiac (October 28) showing +5, the RealClearPolitics average is giving Cruz a Cruz +6.8 over O'Rourke. His challenge to Cruz was bolstered by more than $70 million in donations from across the country, making the race the most expensive Senate contest in USA history.

The Democrat got the endorsement of Texan Willie Nelson, who performed at a rally. Polling has at times shown a close race, but Cruz has consistently led. The president's campaign hosted an all-day tailgate and a rally for supporters, while Trump gave Cruz a new nickname: "Beautiful Ted". "Besides the ability to regenerate his tail!" According to witnesses, O'Rourke, then in his mid-20s, "lost control of his auto and hit a truck, sending his vehicle careening across the center median into oncoming lanes".

Cruz finished a surprising second in the 2016 Republican presidential primary and began the Senate race as a prohibitive favorite. "It's why the nickname stuck - because it's true".

The comments earned O'Rourke national attention and won the approval of basketball star LeBron James, but proved to be red meat for Cruz who responded by invoking soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines saluting the flag.

However, O'Rourke ran his campaign with the assumption that pollsters and political operatives have been wrong about Texas.

"Have you ever actually heard his music?"

The Texas GOP had also played up O'Rourke's punk rock past - the Democrat had been in the band Foss - and two alcohol-related arrests from his 20s.

When asked why she chose to support O'Rourke at the polls, Aguirre told the reporter, "Because he represents everything that Donald Trump isn't".

The best moment of all arguably comes near the end with a final exchange between Cruz and Triumph. "I support spaying and neutering, just like Trump did to you", Triumph quickly shot back, adding his trademark catchphrase, "I kid!"
