Woolsey Fire: California blaze advances on Malibu

The first of the fires broke out on Thursday, northwest of Los Angeles, and roared south, with an estimated 75,000 homes evacuated in western Los Angeles County and eastern Ventura County.

"It is critical that residents pay close attention to evacuation orders", the Los Angeles County Fire Department tweeted.

A wildfire that moved so fast that firefighters couldn't hope to stop it quadrupled in size Friday after destroying several thousand buildings and leveling much of a Northern California town of almost 30,000 people, authorities said.

At least five people have been killed and more than 150,000 evacuated as two big wildfires rage in California, officials say.

About 15,000 residents have been evacuated, and 437 structures remain threatened, according to a Friday morning update.

Caitlyn Jenner's home in the Malibu hills has burned down, TMZ reports. "I pray everyone is safe".

Another fire to the west has burned more than 9 square miles (23 square kilometers) in Ventura County but has slowed since reaching the footprint of a fire stripped away vegetation in 2013.

The fire spread so quickly that residents were taken completely by surprise, leading to harrowing evacuation conditions such gridlocked traffic and fire-blocked streets. She had lived there since 2015, with the pad being prominently featured on her reality TV show.

"People were abandoning their cars and running with their babies and kids".

The Thousand Oaks Teen Center had to be used as an evacuation site overnight for people fleeing the blazes - after being used Thursday as a family reunification center, where frantic parents waited for news of their children in the wake of the massacre at Borderline Bar & Grill.

While not as big as the Camp Fire, the Woolsey Fire, which now measures approximately 8,000 acres, is in a much more densely populated area.

"Evacuated last night. Bleak House an the collection may be endangered but the gift of life remains".

Friday morning, fire officials reported that the fire had jumped Highway 101 near the city of Calabasas.

About 1:30 a.m., all residents south of the Ventura Freeway between Westlake Boulevard on the west, Mulholland Highway to the south and Las Virgenes Road to the east were told to leave the area immediately, according to Malibu Search and Rescue. That helped double the size of the Woolsey Fire to 8 000 acres (3238 hectares), fire officials said.

Pepperdine University on Friday closed its Malibu and Calabasas campuses because of the approaching blaze.

While no homes or businesses have been lost due to the fast-moving fire, a number of RVs and outbuildings have been burned and a firefighter suffered a minor injury, authorities said.
