Trump visit to US cemetery in France canceled due to rain

Trump said he would not meet with leaders in a peace forum to commemorate the end of WWI with the Armistice of November 11, 1918, but would talk with Macron about security and economic trade.

They remained inside the auto until after visiting leaders and France's Emmanuel Macron lined up on stage.

Visiting Paris this week, Trump has bemoaned the cost to the U.S. of helping maintain European security, insisting countries here do more to protect themselves.

Ben Rhodes, who was deputy national security adviser for President Barack Obama, accused Trump of "blowing off honoring American servicemen who died for us" and said the White House should have had a fallback option.

Numerous leaders, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel, met at the Élysée Palace before travelling to the Arc de Triomphe together in motor coaches. Putin is expected to attend, Trump is not.

"We are being hit by attempted break-ins in cyberspace and interventions elsewhere in our democratic lives", Macron said.

In a glass canopy at the foot of the Arc de Triomphe, built by Emperor Napoleon in 1806, Trump, Merkel, Macron, Putin and the other leaders listened through earpieces as the French president spoke.

One of the protesters, with slogans written on her body, got within metres of the rear of the motorcade after jumping over a barricade.

She was hauled away by security along with two others who were stopped on the edge of the famous avenue.

Several minutes later he and Melania arrived under separate umbrellas, the president in a black suit and red tie and the first lady in a grey dress and matching overcoat. Later, he claimed that he was in Paris to celebrate the armistice. The holiday is marked by Veteran's Day in America. Much of the heaviest fighting was in trenches in northern France and Belgium.

The United States entered the war on April 6, 1917 in response to a declaration of war request against Germany from President Woodrow Wilson.

"Europe has been at peace for 73 years".

Macron, sporting a cornflower in his lapel - the French equivalent to Britain's remembrance poppy - and Merkel reviewed grey-clad soldiers from the Franco-German brigade, before unveiling a plaque to Franco-German reconciliation.

Richard Ferrand, a founding member of Macron's political party, said there was "an aggressive side" to Trump's tweet on Friday night about Macron.

"I would say I'm a patriot". Nationalism is a betrayal of patriotism, ' he said in the American president's presence.

Trump described himself and Macron as "very good friends" and expressed support for "a strong Europe".

"Faced by Russian Federation, which is on our borders and which has shown that it can be threatening. we need to have a Europe that can better defend itself by itself, without depending exclusively on the United States". He is scheduled to depart for the United States after that.

A scheduled visit for Trump and first lady Melania to visit the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery, where US soldiers are buried some 50 miles outside of Paris, was canceled because of the rain.

President Trump met with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron on Saturday - a visit that began with a spat as dozens of leaders came together to commemorate the centennial anniversary of World War I's end and all that has since been built between nations in a multilateral world.

White House chief of staff John Kelly and Gen. Joseph Dunford, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, made the roughly 50-mile long trip to the cemetery in a small motorcade of vehicles.
