Maj. Gen. David Baldwin says other military personnel are studying satellite imagery to assess the scope of the damage and map the fire.

"Fire is burning out of control, heading into populated areas of Malibu".

"We thought the fire was going to kill us", she told CNN.

"This fire moved so fast and grew so fast a lot of people got caught by it".

The Camp fire is now 70,000 acres in size, more than three times the size of New York City and Washington D.C. combined.

In Northern California, panicked residents began fleeing Paradise on Thursday as the Camp Fire swept through it.

The remains of five of the victims in Northern California were discovered in or near burned out cars, three outside residences and one inside a home, Butte County's Honea said.

California Governor-elect Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency to provide assistance to the fire-hit areas.

The Chico Fire Department said: "Firefighters continue to actively engage the fire in order to protect life and property". CBS in Sacramento reported at 7:02 a.m. that a spokesperson for CAL FIRE said the fire had grown to about 70,000 acres.

Evacuation orders included the entire city of Malibu, which is home to 13,000, among them some of Hollywood's biggest stars. "People started getting out of their vehicles and running".

In Southern California, the 5600-hectare Woolsey Fire led authorities on Friday morning to expand mandatory evacuation orders to the entire city of Malibu about 50km west of downtown Los Angeles.

Voluntary evacuations of 75 000 homes were called for because of the Woolsey Fire that affected parts of Thousand Oaks in Ventura County northwest of Los Angeles, the site of a shooting massacre this week.

"Pretty much the community of Paradise is destroyed, it's that kind of devastation", CAL FIRE Captain Scott McLean said, according to the Associated Press.

On Thursday, the Camp Fire travelled 18,000 acres to Paradise, California - growing at the rate of almost 80 football fields per minute. "I had just one hour to pack up and evacuate our home", Kim Kardashian wrote in an Instagram Story.

Actress and activist Alyssa Milano tweeted Thursday night that she had to leave her Bell Canyon home due to the fire, adding that she didn't take much with her.

Christy Dawn Little abandoned her Oak Park home, northeast of Thousand Oaks, around 11 p.m. PT.

Early Friday morning, the wildfire jumped the 101 in Ventura County into Agoura Hills, closing a 4-mile stretch of the highway.

The cause of the fires is unclear, but dry conditions and unpredictable winds have made things difficult for the 2,2000 firefighters working hard to contain them. On Friday, part of it was burning into the footprint of a 2013 wildfire, which could slow its spread, Ventura County Fire Chief Mark Lorenzen said.

Authorities said preliminary investigations showed the victims were located in cars that were overcome by the fire, known as the Camp Fire. In Malibu - which has been home to Hollywood stars including Tom Hanks and Dustin Hoffman - flames leaped over the USA 101 freeway to threaten some of the city's wealthiest neighborhoods.

On Thursday, 23 million people were under a Red Flag Warning by the National Weather Service.
