California fires: Number of missing people leaps to 631

Investigators in California revealed Thursday night that another seven sets of human remains have been found in the northern part of the state's Camp Fire, bringing the total number of people killed to 63.

"You have to understand, this is a dynamic list", Butte County Sheriff and Coroner Kory Honea said Thursday evening. He said authorities were making the list public so people could see if they're on it, and let authorities know they are safe.

The latest blazes have capped a pair of calamitous wildfire seasons in California that scientists largely attribute to prolonged drought they say is symptomatic of climate change.

The missing persons list consists of 631 names after the nation's deadliest wildfire in a century.

The California fire department (Cal Fire) said early on Thursday that the "Camp Fire" has destroyed 140,000 acres (56,655 hectares) and was 40 percent contained.

In the aftermath of the disaster, survivors said authorities need to devise a plan to reach residents who can't get a cellphone signal in the hilly terrain or don't have cellphones at all.

Firefighting efforts have made progress in recent days, with the fire 52 percent contained.

After surveying the damage to his own property, 007 star Brosnan appeared in front of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors to ask for aid to be provided to areas swept by the wildfires. One body in Paradise was found in a vehicle that had been flipped on its side. Evacuees milling in the parking lot faced morning temperatures that dropped to just above freezing and many wore breathing masks for protection from lingering smoke. There were portable toilets, and some people used the Walmart restrooms. Two electric utilities have said they experienced equipment problems close to the origins of the blazes around the time they were reported.

Nicole said she fled once her home's mailbox caught fire and neighbors' propane tanks began exploding.
