Angela Merkel's plane makes emergency landing

German Chancellor Angela Merkel will miss the opening of the G20 summit in Argentina after her plane was forced to make an emergency landing in Cologne on Thursday due to a technical problem, her spokeswoman said.

He also said that the back of the Buenos Aires government delegation will take another plane, the air force of Germany.

There were few early signs of trouble on board the flight, aside from a frozen video screen that would normally show the progress of the flight.

"Luckily, we had an excellent crew and the most experienced pilot of the special air mission wing", Merkel said.

"It was a serious malfunction", Merkel told reporters travelling with her aboard the "Konrad Adenauer", a former Lufthansa airlines jet named after post-war Germany's first chancellor.

According to German military blog Augengeradeaus.net, the aircraft was transmitting a 7600 transponder code, indicating a radio failure.

Chancellor Angela Merkel will travel to Morocco for a December 10 conference to approve a UN-backed migration pact. Delegation sources said a different government plane would fly Merkel and Scholz to Madrid, where they would switch to a commercial carrier for the final leg of the trip.

Putin warmly welcomed Merkel and asked her about her plans for the summit.

Merkel has had to reschedule some meetings due to the delay.

The talks with Merkel was not the only cancelled meeting, as earlier the U.S. administration cancelled a meeting with Russia's President Vladimir Putin. She is unlikely to arrive until Friday evening and it was not immediately clear which meetings would have to be rescheduled.

In October, it was grounded in Indonesia after rodents gnawed through electrical cables during an annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), German news agency dpa reported.
