Queen leads tributes to 'our friend' George HW Bush

Bush as a passionate golfer and a "class act", as many across the sports world mourned the death of the 41st U.S. president.

The New York Times reported on Sunday that Bush's last words were an expression of love for his son and fellow former president. His accomplishments were great from beginning to end. President Donald Trump, who ordered federal offices closed on Wednesday for a national day of mourning, is to attend with first lady Melania Trump.

Mr. Bush died at 10:10 p.m. Friday at his home in Houston, according to the family spokesperson.

Bush served as the 41st United States president between 1989 and 1993 and had his term defined by the end of the Cold War, and the Gulf War against Saddam Hussein. He will make his final journey aboard a funeral train.

In lieu of flowers, the Bush family has requested that donations be made to the George Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University. "Dana Carvey's take on George H.W. Bush has always been one of my favorites", One user wrote. The patriarch of a political dynasty, he fathered another president, his son George W. Bush, and a two-term governor and presidential candidate, Jeb Bush.

From former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to current heads of state, leaders praised Bush both for his strength and his moderation, as well as the commitment to internationalism typified by his assembling of a global coalition to oust Iraqi invaders from Kuwait in 1991. Jimmy Carter, the 39th president, said in a statement Bush's presidency was "marked by grace, civility, and social conscience".

"President Bush guided our nation and the world to a peaceful and victorious conclusion of the Cold War", the Trumps wrote.

French President Emmanuel Macron mourned the loss of a leader who "strongly supported the alliance with Europe" - drawing an unspoken contrast to Trump's frequent criticisms of the Old Continent.

Bush's health had been declining for several days. He is survived by his five living children and 17 grandchildren.

"We didn't agree much on domestic policy, but when it came to the worldwide side of things, he was a very wise and thoughtful man", former Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis, a Democrat who lost the presidency to Bush in 1988, told The Associated Press on Saturday. Barbara Bush told CBS in an interview in 2016 that "I don't know how women can vote" for Trump, based on his comments about women. Even Prescott Sheldon Bush came up short in his first his bid for political office, when he ran for the U.S. Senate in 1950.

In 2011, he joined Dwight Eisenhower as the only former United States presidents to be inducted into the golf Hall of Fame. President Bush was a man of unimpeachable character and integrity whose decency and kindness earned him the respect and admiration of the nation he served. Bush's remains will lie in state in the rotunda until Wednesday morning.
