"But, like I told you, I would change all of this for a World Cup". "The Ballon d'Or was more than just a dream for me and it is really an honour and a privilege to hold this trophy".

A week is a long time in football, 10 years are like an eon or at least that is how it must have felt for all those footballers trying to win the biggest individual prize in football - the Ballon d'Or.

"Being historical and the first woman to win the Ballon d'Or is a huge moment in my life", the 23-year-old said. The last player to win it before those two started dominating world soccer awards was Brazil midfielder Kaka with AC Milan in 2007.

In June, Mamic was sentenced to six-and-a-half years jail for siphoning millions of dollars in transfer fees from the club, including part of the $16.5 million the club was paid when Modric moved to Tottenham Hotspur in 2008. He was also voted the European Best Player earlier in the year.

Other honourees on the night included Mbappe, who took home the first-ever Raymond Kopa Trophy given to the top under-21 player. And with Messi in the twilight of his global career, there will be more opportunities in the black and white of Argentina and a Copa America or a World Cup will definitely lend a helping hand in the candidature.

The pair were also nominated for this year's award in a 30-strong shortlist that also featured the likes of France's World Cup winners Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann and Modric's Croatian teammates Ivan Rakitic and Mario Mandzukic.

On his way out the Atletico Madrid attacker was asked what he had to do to win it.

The biggest shock when the results were revealed was the Ballon d'Or victor in the eyes of the Central African Republic. He had a great year.

Both five-time winners stayed away after Ronaldo, who left Modric's Real Madrid for Juventus in the summer, finished second and Barcelona's Messi was back in fifth. And Salah scored 44 goals in his debut season for Liverpool as well as reaching the Champions League final.
