AP Analysis: A rancorous first glimpse of new Trump-Democrats dynamic

US president Donald Trump threatened to shut down the federal government on Tuesday if funding for a border wall was not included in the latest stopgap Washington, D.C. spending plan. "The rebels are negotiating to save face at this point", one Democratic House aide told The Post.

For Trump, owning a shutdown will not be popular generally but will certainly spark cries of "atta boy" among his base of supporters who love it when he upends Washington.

Trump is responding by saying he's "proud to shut down the government" and says he will "take the mantle". "I will be the one to shut it down".

Pelosi hardly saved her disdain for Trump for the private audience, letting it rip in slightly more respectful tones a few hours earlier when the president invited journalists into the Oval Office for what were billed as talks over the national budget.

"It's like a manhood thing with him, as if manhood can be associated with him."

Pelosi: You will not win.

Trump's oft-repeated "build the wall" tweets came less than a day after a 29-year-old gunman shot up a Christmas market in Strasbourg, leaving two people dead, one brain dead and 12 injured in what French authorities called an act of terrorism.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he hasn't given up hope that a shutdown can be averted.

As if spotting a mirage in the Southwestern desert, President Donald Trump and his aides are seeing a wall standing along the Mexico border where none exists. Ryan likely lacks sufficient votes from Republicans who will lose their majority at the end of the month. If the Democrats do not give us the votes to secure our Country, the Military will build the remaining sections of the Wall.

Rather than reach toward compromise, Trump tried to force Democrats to accept the border wall on his terms.

"This temper tantrum that he seems to throw will not get him his wall", Schumer said. "That will be the easiest of all, what do you think Chuck?"

"This has spiraled downwards", Pelosi said.

Pelosi also made waves on Monday with comments she made to Democrats after returning to the Capitol.

"When the president brags he has won North Dakota and IN, he's IN real trouble", retorted Schumer with a smile. And yet, she's long counseled Democrats to not get into the muck, Trump-style, advising Democrats before the State of the Union address in January not to get in the way of his "slobbering self".

"When you look at what happened with the caravans, with the people, with a lot of - we shut it down; we had no choice. We have to have border security." - statements in Oval Office meeting.

If Trump rejects that, Democrats will likely urge a continuing resolution that funds all the remaining appropriations bills at current levels through September 30, an aide said. If the Democrats stubbornly refuse, the president should shut down the government, and leave it shut down indefinitely, until Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer relent.

"Why in the name God are we shutting down the USA government because we won't pay for it?"

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and a small group of Democratic members seeking to oust her are on the cusp of an agreement that would help deliver the longtime Democratic leader the votes to become speaker again. She noted that Trump promised during the 2016 campaign that Mexico would pay for the wall, an idea Mexico has repeatedly rejected.

"We should build it out", he said of the wall. He insisted the military can build it if Democrats won't vote for the funding.
