Apple to start assembling top-end iPhones in India

Overall, new model sales as a proportion of overall iPhone sales in the first 30 days of a new product cycle - talk about being specific - have declined by 1 percent from a year ago and continue a trend dating back to 2016 where the figure topped out at 74 percent. CIRP reported in June that Android users were more likely to switch to Apple's cheapest model, which at the time of the report was the iPhone SE, because they were hesitant to splurge on the iPhone X.

Sales of the XR have been a thorn in Apple's side since it hit stores in late October.

Apple shocked investors last month with a lower-than-expected sales forecast for the Christmas quarter that jolted parts suppliers across the world.

After reports emerged that iPhone is suffering from weaker sales, Apple's vice president of product marketing Greg Joswiak said that iPhone Xr is the most popular iPhone but did not disclose any sales figure to back up his claims. Their data showed that almost 16 per cent Android users made a decision to switch to a new iPhone following the release of iPhone XR, iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max. On the other hand, the combined sales from Android users of the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus was 12 percent.

Apple launched the pricey iPhone X last year but has cut production of that phone, according to industry analysts, since it began selling the newer versions, iPhone XS and XR, globally this year. "It appears that iPhone XR did serve to attract current Android users".

CIRP's co-founder Mike Levin said, "Of course, Apple doesn't just state plainly its launch strategy. But, based on the pricing and features, we can infer that Apple positioned the iPhone XR to appeal to potential operating systems switchers from Android".

Apple shares climbed 7 percent Wednesday, finishing the day at $157.17.
