White Man Kills Black Girl, 7, In Drive-By Shooting, Police Say

Police in Harris County, Texas are actively searching for a white gunman who fired into a vehicle, killing a 7-year-old Black girl and wounding her mother as they were exiting a Houston-area Walmart parking lot, ABC 13 reports.

Sheriff Jesse Razo of the Harris County Sheriff's Office told reporters on Sunday during a press conference that the child, her mother and sisters were leaving a Walmart parking lot in Harris County, Texas, when a man in an unidentified red pickup truck opened fire. The mother was transported with an injury to her arm to an area hospital, Razo said.

Cevilla said his daughter was "loving, caring, very passionate with people, very sweet, just a innocent young girl, very smart in school".

Four other girls, ages 7 to 15 years old, were also in the vehicle.

Investigators said they are still trying to determine a motive for the shooting.

The woman driver, possibly in a panic, was able to flee the scene in her auto, racing onto the nearby Belt Parkway before coming to rest on the median. A total of 5 occupants in the auto witnessed this innocent child, their loved one, shot and killed before their eyes.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said in posts on Twitter and Facebook that the girl who died was 7-year-old Jazmine Barnes. "So senseless. It's never easy, and extra hard during the holiday season", Gonzalez tweeted.

The suspect, who is still at large, "is considered armed and unsafe", Razo told reporters. The two were victims of a drive-by shooting Sunday morning on the Beltway 8 near Wallisville.

"We're going to use all resources available to bring this killer to justice", Razo said.

He urged the suspect to surrender. If you know anything please contact us asap.
