Flu activity increasing in New York City — CDC

The flu is widespread in NY and 10 other states, according to the CDC. At this time last season, there were 1,411 cases.

The health service has identified four cases of a new strain of the H1N1 virus which causes swine flu.

29 people were hospitalized with flu-like symptoms in the Milwaukee area on Thursday. We are averaging approximately 5-6 hospitalizations a day.

During the 2017-2018 flu season, over 300 flu-related deaths were reported in Indiana. Nationally 13 children have died from the flu, none of which were from Virginia.

How Bad Will This Flu Season Be?

It takes up to two weeks after vaccination for the body to achieve full benefit against the flu virus.

She says teach your children to do the "chicken wing", aka cough into their elbows and definitely get your flu shot if you haven't already.

In February of a year ago, the flu vaccine advisory group of the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended changing two of the four components for the flu vaccine administered in the Northern Hemisphere. The dominant strain circulating previous year, H3N2, was especially hard to stop.

Getting a flu shot should be at the top of the list for those at high risk for flu, including the elderly and people with heart disease or lung disease and pregnant women.

The shot can have benefits for entire communities as well.

"We are starting to see an upward trend in cases being reported", said Jenny Galbraith, immunization surveillance coordinator at the North Dakota Department of Public Health.

Question: Are we seeing a more flu activity here in MI?

Getting vaccinated won't guarantee that you won't come down with flu, but if you do, your illness will be milder, health experts say.

Besides the loss of life and the associated grief-which is incalculable-flu outbreaks have a real economic impact as well.

When you are sick, try to limit your contact with others.

Stay home when you are ill-especially do not visit the hospital if you have flu-like symptoms.

"Lots of hand washing".

Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with flu germs. There has been a special concentration in very young kids.
