Golden Globes 2019: What to expect from the big show

Jordan, Ben Stiller and Idris Elba are among the presenters announced for Sunday's Golden Globe Awards.

She's a nominee this year for lead actress in a television drama for her critically acclaimed role in the BBC show Killing Eve.

After a record $41.7 billion global movie box-office in 2018, crowd-pleasers like "A Star is Born", "Black Panther", "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Mary Poppins Returns" are competing for Golden Globe honors.

"After Trump's election and #MeToo, people felt like they had to speak up", said Tim Gray, awards editor at Hollywood publication Variety.

Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg will co-host the three-hour telecast live on Sunday, January 6 on NBC at at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT from The Beverly Hilton.

In 2018, it was impossible to tune into a major award show without hearing some political jabs and comedy from the sitting host of the event.

"I think people are ready and could use a little smile".

Chastain is a five-time Globes nominee who won for 2013 Zero Dark Thirty while Rockwell took home a prize previous year for his supporting role in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. "Everyone is depressed, and maybe that's as good a reason as any that everyone could use a little time to laugh and celebrate". It seems that both hosts agree that they want the Golden Globes to be a bit of an escape for fans.

Oh said she is "not interested at all" in talking about U.S. President Donald Trump, who has been a focus of attacks at award shows since his 2016 election campaign. "That changes things. Just speaking for my own community, people cried a lot in ['Crazy Rich Asians'], and it's not only because it's a great story and a classic romantic comedy - it is because seeing yourself reflected onscreen is really emotional when you don't even know that you're carrying so much grief of never being seen".

Oldman won the Golden Globe a year ago for best performance by an actor in a motion picture for "Darkest Hour". The film picked up four nods at this year's Screen Actors Guild awards and is also expected to be one of the frontrunners when Oscar nominations are announced later this month.
