Ocasio-Cortez defends himself skillfully against criticism of dance video

But social media users jumped to her defence.

The story did not list any examples of conservatives attacking her and only journalists defending her, prompting calls for Newsweek to correct its story.

On Friday, a video released online by a detractor showing a young Ocasio-Cortez dancing with fellow Boston University students to the Phoenix song Lisztomania in a remake of a mashup of scenes from the Brat Pack movies.

Despite the clip being circulated in an apparent attempt to discredit Ocasio-Cortez, it has been widely embraced.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was sworn into Congress on Thursday - but later, the New York Democrat was inducted into an even more exclusive body: the "Breakfast Club". "Newly unearthed video reveals that when @AOC was in college, she was ... adorable", The Washington Post's Karen Tumulty tweeted.

The account was deactivated shortly after, and it is not clear who compiled the mash-up. She then launched into a broadside against the Republican Party.

Ocasio-Cortez also reflected on her own struggles.

"Wait till they find out Congresswomen dance too!"

"Once you get to the tippy-tops, on your $US10 millionth dollar, sometimes you see tax rates as high as 60 per cent or 70 per cent", Ocasio-Cortez said.

"Yeah. Yeah. No question", Ocasio-Cortez replied when asked if Trump is racist. So while Ocasio-Cortez's deal proposes a top marginal rate of 70 percent on income above $10 million a year, only income after the first $10 million would be taxed at the rate of 70 percent. The asteroid, 23238 Ocasio-Cortez, has been named in her honor by the International Astronomical Union.

After a backlash, she followed up with another tweet: "For the GOP crying that this is a "threat" - I don't have power to subpoena anybody".

"Oh that's right, nearly forgot: GOP works for the corporate CEOs showering themselves in multi-million bonuses; not the actual working people whose wages + healthcare they're ripping off for profit", Ocasio-Cortez said.

Her proposal to increase taxes on the wealthy to fund her Green New Deal, which aims to eliminate carbon emissions in the USA within 12 years, was highly criticized.

"So, I'm assuming I'm not going to get an answer for the other $38 trillion", Tapper said.
