Schumer And Pelosi Issue Rebuke To Trump’s Oval Office Speech

His Tuesday evening remarks were to be followed by a televised rebuttal from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who strongly oppose the wall and have repeatedly called on Trump to reopen shuttered portions of the government while border negotiations continue.

"I want us to first reopen the government", the 3rd district congresswoman said. But I know that the president has the authority to do it in certain situations if it's declared essential to national security. "We can hire the personnel to facilitate trade and immigration at the border".

Emphasizing that he's not abandoning his security argument, Trump said in a fundraising email Tuesday: "I want to make one thing clear to Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi: Your safety is not a political game or a negotiation tactic!"

There's growing concern about the toll the shutdown is taking on everyday Americans, including disruptions in payments to farmers and trouble for home buyers who are seeking government-backed mortgage loans - "serious stuff", according to Sen.

"I just addressed the nation on Border Security". Trump acknowledged on Tuesday that his long-proposed idea for a massive border wall is "medieval"-but he spun that as a positive".

"It may seem "manufactured" to them because they are sitting safely behind walls, but for those of us out in regular America, we are victims, we are prone to the victimization of illegal aliens and crime", she said on "Fox & Friends" on Wednesday morning. But he did not mention that Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, a "zero-tolerance" policy instituted by the Trump administration's Justice Department, which led to almost 2,000 children being temporarily separated from their families after being caught trying to cross the USA border, also sparked a national outcry.

The bollard-style corrugated steel border fence now advocated by Mr. Trump once garnered broad support among Democrats. Trump interacted with "Angel parents" frequently while he was campaigning for the White House, often invoking their departed sons and daughters during speeches and speaking about the parents on a first-name basis. The administration says it will act on its own to ensure the refunds. Republicans were expected to join Democrats in voting, defying the plea to stay with the White House. Some say Trump's hardline policies are slowing processing for migrants, creating an overwhelming bottleneck at the border.

The White House requested eight minutes to make Trump's case on television.

He said Schumer "continued to raise his voice" in a back-and-forth with Trump, who then "calmly" asked Pelosi about the way ahead.

"The president has now put forth a proposal that includes a strategy to protect the American people with technology at our ports of entry to counter narcotics and weapons coming into this country, detention beds for people who get into this country illegally, humanitarian needs and to allow people to claim asylum in their country of origin". Federal workers still on the job apparently will miss this week's paychecks.

"I view that as absolutely Mexico is paying for the wall", Trump said.
