3 dead, at least 23 injured in Canada capital bus crash

Ottawa paramedics said they were responding to a call for multiple injuries after a double-decker bus drove into a bus shelter inside the Transitway, taking off part of the shelter's structure.

Watson also said that 23 people were injured in the collision, some very seriously, and taken to hospital. Of those transported, 14 were in critical condition and 11 were in serious condition, paramedic chief Myles Cassidy said in the news conference.

The bus driver, initially arrested hours after the crash, has since been released unconditionally pending further investigation.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said he was devastated to hear of those who were killed and injured in the bus collision. "Our goal is to ensure that we get it right". This particular bus was not scheduled to stop at the Westboro station, which is another aspect being probed in the investigation. Chief Bordeleau also added Saturday the public shouldn't draw any conclusions from the initial arrest of the driver.

Rivett-Carnac said that the first responders seemed "cool, calm and collected" as they worked "quite systematically to gain access to the passengers on the top (of) the bus".

Mailloux says his first thought was for his wife and son, who were scheduled to be travelling through the area shortly after the crash.

She says their names will not be released at this time.

The city is still reeling after a westbound OC Transpo double-decker bus hit the Westboro station shelter just as afternoon rush hour was getting underway, in a scene that witnesses have described as "chaos".

While the National Transportation Safety Board does remain on the scene of the crash, Bordeleau said they are not involved in the investigation but collecting data for a study being conducted on similar crashes.

The crash is the second involving an Ottawa transit bus in recent years.

In 2013, an Ottawa bus collided with a Via Rail train in suburban Barrhaven, killing six people.
