Washington, Baltimore brace for snow; storm kills 4 people in Missouri

Forecasters expect several inches of snow elsewhere in New Jersey and southeastern Pennsylvania before the storm ends.

In Europe, snow has continued to plague the regions surrounding the European Alps, with five deaths reported in Austria and France as forecasts predicted more bad weather.

Britt Smith, Jefferson City Public Works operations division director, said: "This snow is probably one of the wettest snows I've seen, and I've been doing this for 15 years".

A massive winter storm, stretching from the Great Plains to the East Coast, is dumping snow and causing hundreds of traffic accidents as thousands shelter under winter storm warnings.

Four people in Missouri and three in Kansas died in roadway accidents, authorities in both states reported.

Virginia State Police said the driver of a military surplus vehicle was killed late Saturday after he lost control on Interstate 81 due to slick road conditions.

The storm has caused 53 arriving and 39 departing flight cancellations at St. Louis Lambert International Airport with more are expected into Saturday morning, the airport said on its website.

On Friday, more than 800 motorists became stranded during rush hour as falling snow made Missouri's Interstate 44 virtually impassable. "This is where the highest accumulations of (3 inches or more) are expected". Up to 11 inches (28 centimeters) of snow was reported in St. Louis.

The National Weather Service says snow was to begin about 3 southwestern IL and spread northeast throughout the evening, reaching the Chicago area by early Saturday. The Missouri State Highway Patrol says almost 300 vehicles had slid off roads across the state and more than 175 crashes had been reported by late Saturday morning.

As of early Sunday afternoon, more than 100,000 customers were without power in North Carolina.

Washington, where many federal government offices are closed because of the USA government shutdown, is expected to receive 6 to 8 inches of snow when the storm arrives there, according to the National Weather Service.

In Virginia, a 73-year-old Georgia man died Saturday, reports the AP, citing state police.

"We will have full crews in all night, keeping an eye on that", Becker said at a press conference Saturday evening.
